Cafe Giang: Vietnamese Egg Coffee (カフェ ジャン)
Wandering around the brightly lit and color-filled streets of Yokohama's Chinatown with stomachs full of all-you-can-eat soup-dumplings and many more authentic Chinese dishes from a nearby restaurant, my Tokyo bestie and I made our way around a bend and stumbled across a darker-lit path that emitted an intense yellow hew from a sole shop glowing in the night.
The first time that I visited Cafe Giang was over the summer when the intriguing shop color and name caught our attentions--Vietnamese Egg Coffee. Of course, we had to swing by and grab a quick drink, even if we were already filled to max capacity.
The images pictured throughout this posting are from my second visit, but I have tried both their Cocoa and Matcha Egg Coffees, but my vote for sure goes to the Cocoa one since I'm a huge chocolate fan (as many of you may know by now). I also really love matcha, however, the intense bitter brew of the tea overpowered the seemingly monumental amount of fluffy-sweet egg deliciousness.
The eggaristas (something I just made up: egg + barista) recommended taking a spoonful, or two, or three, or until satisfied, of the whipped sugar-egg mixture, then stir everything together, very well. I'm not sure why I find the mixing part so difficult, but I still can't seem to get the blending part quite right. Maybe because the meringue is so thick, and the watery beverage at the bottom is so thin, that I can't seem to find the happy medium between the two. If you happen to mix it perfectly, please show me your stirring technique, cause I clearly can't do it properly.
I find it very interesting that they serve your drinks in glasses sitting in hot glass bowls of water to help retain the heat for just a tad bit longer. If you order takeout, sadly you don't get to enjoy this little bit of happiness.
